The premise of his article is based on the following statement:
"I think it is indisputable that Al Gore had more actual votes cast for him in Florida."
He is completely wrong about that statement. It is not an indisputable fact that more votes were cast for Al Gore, in fact the Al Gore campaign didn't believe that either. They never wanted to have a state wide recount, which would have been only fair. They only wanted to have recounts in those counties where he was close or had lost. Since he was on the loosing side he had nothing to loose.
There were also thousands of military votes in Florida that were never allowed to be counted. Most of those would have gone for Bush. Although the military personnel did everything they were told they needed to do to cast a ballot, their votes were disqualified through a technicallity that they couldn't overcome.
The wish from Al Gore campaign was never a desire to give the race in Florida to the one who had the most votes. It was only to capture Florida and therefor the presidency. Al Gore wouldn't have needed Florida if he would have been able to capture his own home state. But since his home state went to Bush, that put all the pressure on the Florida race.
It would have been nice if the election could have been a simple vote and obvious choice, but you should not assume that the clamor over the Florida vote means that Bush stole the election. It was Gore that was trying to steal the election.
One of the big events in Florida that hurt Bush's chances was that the news media was allowed to forecast the results of the election before the polls had closed in the Florida panhandle. There were many Bush voters that were told the election was decided, and therefore decided to not even vote. There were suppose to be controls in place that wouldn't have allowed that to happen, but since Florida spans two time zones, they didn't take into account that an announcement could affect the panhandle before the polls had closed.
I am sure I have forgotten a lot about that election, but it would be wrong for you to assume that brother Walsh has all of his fact straight.
